OUR BEGINNINGS
Many years ago, in a fertile corner of Quimbaya, in the Mesa Baja area, lived my grandfather, a man dedicated and passionate about his land and his people. With his hands hardened by work and his unbreakable spirit, he ran a small mill where he produced panela, a legacy that had been passed down from generation to generation.
The sweet aroma of freshly extracted sugar mingled with the mountain breeze as the farmers, shoulder to shoulder with my grandfather, worked hard every day. But like so many other stories of effort and sacrifice, his was not without challenges. As time went by, market dynamics changed relentlessly. Prices for panela began to fall, to the point where the cost of production exceeded the value obtained in the sale. The situation became unsustainable, and my grandfather, along with many other farmers, was forced to close his mill. The closure not only meant the end of a business, but the pain of seeing a tradition that had been the livelihood of so many families fade away.
Years later, with my grandfather's memory present in every step we take, the next generation decided that we would not allow his sacrifice and that of other farmers to be forgotten. We decided to take up that tradition again, but this time with a renewed vision, focused on justice and sustainability. That's how our company, Mesa Baja, was born, a name that not only honors my grandfather's memory, but also represents the resilience of those who, like him, never gave up despite the adversities.
At Mesa Baja, every step we take is guided by a firm commitment: that no farmer who works with us will experience the pain and despair that my grandfather experienced. We have set out to give new value to panela, ensuring that everyone who is part of this chain has a more just and dignified future. Because for us, Mesa Baja is not just a name; it is a symbol of tradition, resistance, and an unwavering commitment to a better future for all.
